CQUniversity has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Sunshine Hydro to develop a Mini Superhybrid™ technology, aimed at advancing Central Queensland’s decarbonisation efforts and establishing a globally significant testbed for long-duration energy storage and renewable energy.
The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will focus on developing and trialling the Mini Superhybrid™, a cutting-edge software platform that simulates a comprehensive renewable energy ecosystem.
This innovative technology integrates various components, including pumped hydro, electrolysers, wind, and solar energy, to model and optimise renewable energy flow.
Paul Hodgson, Director of CQUniversity‘s Centre for Hydrogen and Renewable Energy, emphasised the partnership’s role in bolstering regional expertise: “This collaboration will establish deeper training capabilities for the technology, operation, and maintenance of flow batteries, electrolysers, hydrogen production and dispensing, and methanol production facilities.”
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance skills development in Central Queensland, particularly in the energy and mining sectors.
It aims to facilitate upskilling and cross-skilling of workers, opening doors to new projects such as green fuels.
The CQU Mini-Superhybrid™ project holds promise as a proof-of-concept for supplying hydrogen feedstock to a potential green fuels plant.
This development could create new job opportunities, foster new skills, and pave the way for Gladstone to emerge as a sustainable green fuels hub.
As part of the MoU, CQUniversity and Sunshine Hydro have committed to co-funding two research higher degree scholarships through the Elevate Scholarship Program.
This investment in education will support advanced research in renewable energy and long-duration storage technologies.
Rick McElhinney, CEO of Sunshine Hydro, highlighted the global significance of the project: “The learnings from this initiative will be world-leading and followed globally, informing how we build the future of long-duration storage and renewable energy. Coursework will be developed based on it, attracting students from all over the world to Gladstone.”
The partnership aims to demonstrate a financially viable model for supporting Long Duration Energy Storage in the market.
This breakthrough could accelerate the transformation of the Port of Gladstone and other Australian locations into green fuel hubs.
As Australia continues to pursue its decarbonisation goals, the CQUniversity-Sunshine Hydro partnership represents a significant step forward in renewable energy innovation and skills development for Central Queensland.
