Bechtel, a global leader in engineering, construction, and project management, has been awarded the delivery of three critical phases of the 1.3GW AC Mammoth Solar facility in Indiana, US.
The project, commissioned by domestic developer and renewable energy operator Doral Renewables, is set to boost Indiana’s total solar capacity by more than 20 per cent, marking a significant milestone for the state’s renewable energy landscape.
With the recent receipt of full notice to proceed (FNTP) from Doral Renewables, Bechtel will now move from preparatory works, which began earlier this year, to full-scale construction activities.
The company is responsible for the Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II phases, which collectively account for 900MW AC of the facility’s total capacity.
The Mammoth Solar facility is poised to become one of the largest solar installations in the United States.
Over the next two years, Bechtel will oversee the installation of approximately two million solar modules — half of which will be manufactured domestically — along with power cables and substations.
The company plans to leverage its digital delivery approach and autonomous technologies to streamline the project.
The construction phase is expected to create more than 1,200 jobs, with 15 per cent of these positions dedicated to apprenticeships.
This initiative aims to provide valuable hands-on training for young professionals and those new to the construction industry.
Scott Austin, Bechtel’s general manager of renewables and clean power, commented on the project’s significance: “Bechtel is proud to partner with Doral to deliver one of the nation’s largest solar projects.
“A project of this scale depends on strong collaboration with local building trades to ensure access to the skilled workforce needed.
“We’re working closely with craft professionals, creating high-quality jobs, and being a reliable partner to the community as we help deliver Mammoth Solar and increase the supply of clean, reliable solar power.”
Looking ahead, Doral Renewables plans to introduce agrivoltaics at the site upon completion in 2027.
This innovative approach will combine renewable energy generation with agricultural practices, allowing for livestock grazing and crop cultivation around the solar panels.
The goal is to enable local landowners to maximise land use and maintain ongoing farming operations.
Earlier this year, Bechtel was also selected to manage the design and construction of a utility-scale solar project in Lincoln County, Nevada, further cementing its role in advancing large-scale renewable energy infrastructure across the US.
