Australia’s wind energy sector leads the way in community engagement

Australia's wind energy sector leads the way in community engagement

Australia’s wind energy sector is gaining international recognition for its world-class approach to community engagement and local partnerships, particularly in the Gippsland region of Victoria.

This collaborative effort between government and industry is setting a new standard for major infrastructure projects in the Asia Pacific region.

Stewart Mullin, Chief Industry Officer for the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), praised the community engagement work in Gippsland as “definitely best practice”.

With nearly two decades of experience in the wind industry, Mullin emphasised the importance of clear communication in building trust and relationships with local communities.

In Gippsland, 12 companies holding provisional licences are working together on feasibility studies and community consultations, demonstrating a unified approach to developing offshore wind facilities.

This collaborative effort aims to reduce consultation fatigue among residents and showcase the industry’s commitment to building a modern energy sector that works with communities.

The Victorian government is supporting the growth of renewable energy, with Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio stating: “Victoria has met every climate target it’s set to date and is on track to meet its next one as we work towards 95 per cent renewable energy generation by 2035.”

The state consistently maintains the lowest wholesale energy prices in the market.

Recognising Australia’s progress, GWEC has invited representatives from the Gippsland project to present at the upcoming Asia Pacific Wind Energy Summit in Melbourne, scheduled for September 16-18, 2025.

The event is expected to draw 2,000 national and international delegates.

The Gippsland Offshore Wind transmission project aims to connect at least 2 Gigawatts (GW) of offshore energy by 2032, providing a locally produced, environmentally friendly, and reliable source of energy for Victorians.

This initiative is expected to create significant employment opportunities and stimulate business across various industries.

As Australia’s wind energy sector continues to grow, with wind farms currently accounting for 13 per cent of total electricity generation, the country is poised to play a leading role in the global transition to renewable energy.

The success of community engagement efforts in Gippsland serves as a model for future projects, both domestically and internationally.
