Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) is on track to maintain power reliability until at least 2030, but urgent delivery of new generation, storage, and grid infrastructure will be vital to avoid shortfalls as data centres and electrification drive a surge in energy consumption.
According to the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) 2026 Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO), a record 40 gigawatts (GW) of committed and anticipated generation and storage projects are currently in the pipeline, representing more than half of the NEM’s total existing capacity.
The report highlights that reliability standards will be maintained across all NEM regions over the next four years. If projects backed by government schemes and actionable transmission developments are delivered on schedule, reliability will be safeguarded until 2033 to 2034 in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, and until 2034 to 2035 in Tasmania.
However, AEMO warned that commissioning delays could pull those reliability deadlines forward to 2030 to 2031 in New South Wales and Victoria, 2031 to 2032 in South Australia, 2032 to 2033 in Queensland, and 2033 to 2034 in Tasmania.
The grid transition comes as electricity demand expands rapidly. Driven by industrial electrification and an influx of data centres, energy usage from the data sector alone is projected to increase seven-fold over the next decade, growing from 3 per cent of operational demand to 13 per cent, around 34 terawatt hours.
Ageing coal-fired generators are also being retired, shifting reliance onto a diverse mix of utility-scale renewables, firming storage, gas back-up, and Consumer Energy Resources (CER).
Home battery adoption has surged following the federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which has added 2.4 GW of capacity since mid-2025.
AEMO emphasised that maintaining a stable power supply requires a balanced technology mix, reliable gas backup during winter lulls, and ongoing investment in grid security.
While no immediate reliability gaps were declared for 2027–28 or 2029–30, AEMO noted that existing coal plants must maintain high availability until their scheduled closure dates.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the report showed Australia’s energy transformation was gathering pace.
“This is what getting on with the energy transition looks like, with record amounts of new generation and storage being built and connected, strengthening reliability as ageing coal-fired power stations approach their scheduled retirement dates,” the minister said.
“There is more work to do and AEMO is clear we need to keep building, but this report shows the pipeline is strong and reliability is improving.”
