Australia launches new efficiency standard to boost cleaner car adoption

06 Jan, 2025
Australia launches NVES to boost cleaner car adoption

Australia has taken a significant step towards cleaner and more affordable transportation with the introduction of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) on January 1, 2025.

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) hails this move as a turning point in the country’s automotive landscape.

The NVES aims to incentivise manufacturers to offer their most efficient vehicles in Australia, including a wider range of electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel-efficient petrol, diesel, and hybrid options.

This standard is expected to accelerate the adoption of cleaner vehicles and reduce emissions from new passenger vehicles by more than 60 per cent by 2030.

Aman Gaur, Head of Legal, Policy and Advocacy at the Electric Vehicle Council, stated: “The New Year ushers in new standards for new cars in Australia.

“From today, Australia officially moves away from being the world’s dumping ground for outdated, high-emissions vehicles, and demands a greater range of cleaner, cheaper-to-run cars, vans and utes that are offered in the US and Europe.”

The introduction of NVES follows a record-breaking year for EV sales in Australia, with over 100,000 new battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles sold in 2024.

The EVC anticipates that this trend will continue, driven by increased choice and competitive pricing.

The first six months of 2025 will serve as an adaptation period for the industry, allowing manufacturers to adjust their strategies and increase the supply of low and zero-emissions vehicles.

The credit and penalty scheme associated with the NVES will be enforced from mid-2025.

Gaur emphasised the benefits of the new standard, saying: “The NVES will lower our fuel bills, offer a wider choice of the latest, most fuel-efficient cars, and improve the air we breathe by reducing emissions.”

This initiative aligns with Australia’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and is expected to save Australians money on fuel while reducing the country’s dependence on foreign oil.

As Australia joins other advanced economies in implementing vehicle efficiency standards, the NVES marks a crucial step towards a more sustainable and cost-effective automotive future for the nation.
