Australia faces challenges on road to ultra low-cost solar future

Australia’s ambition to power its economy with ultra low-cost solar is well within reach, but the goal could slip away without an urgent shift in how utility-scale projects are delivered across the country.

That is the primary finding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)’s updated Ultra Low-Cost Solar White Paper.

Ultra low-cost solar promises a dramatic leap forward in efficiency and affordability, offering cheap green electricity capable of driving energy-intensive industries such as green metals and hydrogen fuels.

However, ARENA cautioned that project execution speed and scale now represent the single biggest risk to achieving this vision.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller emphasised that the nation must look beyond technological advances and rethink its practical approach to construction and grid integration.

“Australia needs a shift in focus towards how solar projects are delivered, not just what is installed,” Miller said.

“Without a change to the approach in how large-scale solar is built, financed and integrated, we risk missing the opportunity to bring costs down fast enough to support the next phase of the energy transition.”

While ARENA-backed initiatives are actively pioneering faster and safer deployment methods, such as 5B’s modular solar arrays, Built Robotics’ automated piling, and Luminous Robotics’ installation systems, broad industry progress is being hampered.

Supply chain bottlenecks, workforce shortages, grid connection delays, inflation, and a tougher investment climate are combining to slow construction timelines.

To overcome these headwinds, the agency is using real-world test beds and commercial trial projects to help lower systemic delivery costs this decade.

Miller stressed that the coming years will be decisive in determining whether the nation can commercialise these operational breakthroughs.

“Australia has a strong foundation in solar, but the next phase will depend on how quickly we can translate innovation into industrialisation,” he said.

“The progress we’re seeing today gives us confidence in what’s possible, but the next few years will be critical to turning this potential into reality.”
