In a significant move to address the urgent need for a global shift away from fossil fuels, AFRY has released its groundbreaking Fossil Detox Report during New York Climate Week.
The report outlines critical technologies and strategies required to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources and mitigate the ongoing climate crisis.
The comprehensive study delves into key sectors such as electricity grids, hydrogen, and storage technologies, presenting a detailed roadmap for accelerating the climate transition.
Jonas Gustavsson, President and CEO of AFRY, emphasised the need for increased efforts despite the unprecedented growth of renewable technologies.
“Our projections suggest the average lifetime cost for wind and solar must fall by roughly 20 per cent by 2030 to ensure competitiveness, especially for offshore wind,” Gustavsson stated.
The report highlights the crucial role of smart grids in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources, optimising energy use, reducing waste, and enhancing energy system resilience.
Additionally, it identifies effective energy storage techniques and carbon capture and storage (CCS) as critical components in this transition.
To accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels, the Fossil Detox Report presents nine key measures.
These include setting clear long-term emissions targets, enhancing sector-specific strategies, incentivising CO2-free technologies, optimising existing energy assets, and innovating in hard-to-abate sectors.
Gustavsson stressed the importance of international cooperation in creating a sustainable future.
“We at AFRY believe this transition is not merely a challenge but an opportunity for innovation, economic growth, and social equity,” he concluded.
The release of this report marks a significant step towards achieving global climate goals and provides a comprehensive framework for policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to navigate the complex landscape of energy transition.
