ACCIONA Energía and Prologis partner to boost solar energy in Spain

ACCIONA Energía and Prologis partner to boost distributed solar energy in Spain

ACCIONA Energía, a leading renewable energy company, has announced a groundbreaking agreement with Prologis, a global leader in logistics real estate, to install rooftop solar panels on several of Prologis’ properties across Spain.

The partnership aims to install up to 10.5MWp of photovoltaic capacity on the roofs of Prologis’ warehouses and buildings, effectively transforming them into clean and sustainable solar power plants.

While Prologis will retain ownership of these community solar installations, ACCIONA Energía will be responsible for their installation, operation, and maintenance for a period of 10 years.

This initiative serves a dual purpose: it will supply energy to Prologis’ customers, accelerating decarbonisation in the logistics sector, and provide community solar power to local residents.

Neighbours within a two-kilometre radius will have the opportunity to consume part of the generated energy through shared consumption subscriptions, allowing them to reduce their electricity bills while supporting environmental sustainability through the use of 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Two of the first solar facilities to be installed under this agreement will be located in Penedès (Barcelona) and San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), with capacities of 2.5MWp and 3MWp respectively.

These two installations alone are expected to prevent the emission of 3,300 tonnes of CO2 annually through the consumption of local clean energy.

Cristian Oller, Head of Asset Management for Southern Europe at Prologis, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability: “We are constantly working and innovating with new sustainable formulas to apply in our logistics parks, such as this alliance with ACCIONA Energía. Our Net Zero 2040 program offers us a realistic timetable for achieving our sustainable goals.”

This partnership aligns with Prologis’ broader sustainability objectives and ESG criteria.

The company has already installed over 500MW of solar capacity, putting it halfway towards its target of 1GW by 2025.

For ACCIONA Energía, this agreement reinforces its commitment to promoting self-consumption and decentralised energy generation to decarbonise the logistics and transport sectors, as well as Spanish homes.

The company has been expanding its energy services to corporate customers, public entities, residential customers, and small and medium-sized enterprises in Spain.

This collaboration between ACCIONA Energía and Prologis represents a significant step forward in the adoption of distributed solar energy in Spain, contributing to the country’s renewable energy goals and supporting the transition to a more sustainable future.
