SmartCrete CRC invests $3.2m in sustainable concrete research

The SmartCrete Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) has announced a significant investment of $3.2 million in funding for six industry-led research projects aimed at advancing sustainable concrete practices in Australia.

This initiative, co-funded by industry partners and research organisations, represents a total investment of $14 million, combining cash and in-kind contributions.

The projects are designed to explore innovative approaches to the design, use, and management of concrete, which are crucial for achieving Australia’s net-zero emissions target by 2050.

SmartCrete CRC CEO Clare Tubolets highlighted the importance of these projects in transforming the concrete sector towards sustainability.

She emphasised the need to adopt solutions that minimise the environmental impact of concrete while ensuring the sector’s long-term viability.

The projects will leverage cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing and computer vision systems to address challenges related to efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness in concrete construction and maintenance.

Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Taylor AO, Chair of SmartCrete CRC, underscored the significance of collaborative research in developing sustainable materials and technologies.

She noted that these projects are pivotal in transforming Australia’s concrete ecosystem and delivering positive outcomes not only for industry partners but also for the wider community.

Since its inception, SmartCrete CRC has invested over $40 million in 39 innovation collaborations across three research programs: sustainable concrete, engineered solutions, and asset management.

These efforts aim to drive material change, develop new technologies, and promote best practices to achieve sustainable concrete infrastructure in Australia.
