New grants to boost energy efficiency in community sport

08 Apr, 2026

Community sporting clubs across Australia will soon be able to access new funding to cut energy use, lower bills and strengthen their resilience to extreme weather, with the federal government announcing details of its upcoming Game On: Teaming Up for Climate Action grants program.

The initiative will provide $35.3 million over two funding rounds, supporting up to 500 clubs to upgrade facilities, improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

Grant guidelines have now been released, giving clubs time to prepare before applications open on 11 June 2026, when the first $17.6 million round begins.

Eligible clubs will be able to apply for one off grants of up to $100,000. The funding is designed to help community organisations decarbonise their operations and better withstand climate driven events such as heatwaves, storms and flooding.

Projects that can be supported include installing solar PV and battery systems, conducting energy audits, upgrading lighting and HVAC systems, and adding disaster ready infrastructure to protect facilities during extreme weather.

More than 14 million Australians use community sporting facilities each year, and the government says lowering energy costs will allow clubs to redirect savings into equipment, programs and local participation.

The Game On grants will complement other national initiatives, including the Cheaper Home Batteries program and financing options available through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. Groups of clubs will also be able to apply jointly, enabling upgrades across multiple sites under a single application.
