Ingenia Communities has set a new benchmark for sustainable housing in Australia, achieving Green Star Homes Designed certification for all 262 homes in its Beveridge, Victoria community.
This marks the first large-scale implementation of Green Star Homes, establishing a new standard for sustainable housing at scale.
The Beveridge development showcases the seamless integration of sustainability, affordability, and livability.
Key features of the community include solar-powered, fully electric homes that eliminate gas usage and generate renewable energy.
These homes are expected to save residents approximately $2,066 annually in utility bills compared to 30-year-old gas-powered homes.
The homes boast high-performance insulation and airtight design, achieving a minimum 7.5-star NatHERS rating, which surpasses national building code requirements.
Double-glazed windows with thermally efficient frames enhance energy efficiency and reduce noise.
The community also incorporates recycled water systems and lighter-coloured roofs to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
Davina Rooney, CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia, praised Ingenia’s leadership, stating: “Ingenia is redefining seniors living by delivering homes designed for energy efficiency, health and resilience.
“These homes represent a vision for a sustainable future where comfort, affordability, and climate responsibility come together.”
Ingenia CEO John Carfi emphasised the broader industry impact, noting that this initiative not only provides sustainable, cost-effective housing for senior Australians but also builds capacity across the construction sector.
Beyond individual homes, the Beveridge community is targeting a 4-star Green Star Communities certification.
With features like an embedded energy network, recycled water systems, and a communal electric vehicle, the community offers an innovative model for sustainable living.
This achievement demonstrates that sustainability is not a luxury but an achievable standard for Australians, setting a new precedent in the housing industry.
