Toll and BlueScope drive electric innovation forward



Toll Group has introduced two new Volvo FMe Electric 6×4 Prime Movers into its supply chain fleet to bolster freight and warehousing capabilities for BlueScope Steel, marking a significant advancement in decarbonising Australia’s heavy logistics sector.

These state-of-the-art electric vehicles offer a 270 km range on a single charge and can haul payloads up to 26.5 tonnes, achieving an annual reduction of 192 tonnes of carbon dioxide, making them ideal for industrial freight applications.

Operating within BlueScope’s logistics network, the Volvo Electric Prime Movers will decrease emissions, noise, and environmental impact while ensuring the robust performance and reliability needed for large-scale steel transport.

Their integration is a core element of Toll Group’s $67 million investment in battery electric heavy vehicles and charging infrastructure, co-funded alongside the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) under the ‘Driving the Nation’ program, which aims to deploy 28 electric vehicles into the fleet.

Michael Rugendyke, President of Toll Group – Resources & Industrials, emphasised the strategic importance of the collaboration, stating: “This collaboration with BlueScope reflects our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability.

“By integrating the Volvo Electric Prime Movers into our operations, we’re demonstrating that electric heavy vehicles are not just a future vision, they’re a viable, real-world solution available today.”

BlueScope’s involvement in this initiative is a tangible expression of its sustainability agenda. Jeff Moore, BlueScope’s National Manager Supply Chain, said: “Decarbonising transport is essential to achieving our climate ambitions.

“Working with Toll Group and Volvo Group to introduce these vehicles into our operations allows us to take meaningful action on reducing emissions while continuing to deliver for our customers.”

The two Volvo Electric Prime Movers were officially unveiled on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, at Toll’s Arndell Park facility in Sydney during a ceremony attended by leadership from Toll, BlueScope, and Volvo.

The vehicles commenced service this month, transporting steel products between BlueScope facilities in metropolitan Sydney, supporting emission reduction efforts while generating valuable data for future low-emission transport projects.

This milestone underscores the power of collaboration among industry leaders in accelerating the transition toward sustainable logistics in Australia’s industrial freight sector.
