SMA Australia unveils revolutionary battery inverter for large-scale power systems

SMA Australia has announced the launch of its new Sunny Central Storage UP-S battery inverter, which is set to transform the battery energy storage system (BESS) market.

This next-generation inverter is designed to meet the growing global energy demands and enhance grid stability for large-scale power plants.

The Sunny Central Storage UP-S offers a range of advanced features that position it as a critical asset for power system operators worldwide.

At its core is an advanced SiC MOSFET semiconductor stack, which delivers superior power conversion efficiency and the ability to operate at full capacity even during grid-forming operations.

John Alexander, SMA Australia Vice-President Large-Scale, emphasised the game-changing nature of the new inverter.

“The Sunny Central Storage UP-S eliminates the trade-off between energy arbitrage and grid-forming services, allowing operators to fully capitalise on both opportunities without compromising system reliability or efficiency,” he stated.

Key features of the Sunny Central Storage UP-S include outstanding efficiency, with the capability to deliver continuously at 4,600 kVA and provide dynamic grid support during peak demand periods.

The inverter achieves 100 per cent nameplate capacity while operating below maximum thermal levels, thanks to its advanced semiconductor technology.

The new inverter also boasts advanced grid-forming capabilities, providing industry-leading inverter-based inertia and improved short-circuit ratios.

Its black start capability allows for decentralised grid restoration, offering rapid response to outages and safeguarding energy supply.

Coinciding with this launch, SMA has achieved ISO 27001 certification for its Sunny Portal PV system monitor, underscoring the company’s commitment to robust cybersecurity measures.

The unveiling of the Sunny Central Storage UP-S took place at the All Energy Australia event, where SMA Australia also introduced its upcoming SMA Home Storage Solution.

This solution includes the 1-phase 2-in-1 Sunny Boy Smart Energy inverter and the Home Storage battery, set to enter the Australian market in the near future.

The launch of the Sunny Central Storage UP-S is currently exclusive to Australia, with availability in other countries expected in the first quarter of 2025.
