Refrigerant leaks in HVAC systems pose environmental and financial risks



Leaking refrigerant in commercial and industrial HVAC and refrigeration systems is causing significant environmental and financial concerns, according to Australian engineering expert John Bucknell.

These leaks, which can be challenging to detect and fix, are contributing to climate change and increasing energy costs for businesses across various sectors.

The impact of refrigerant leaks is twofold. Firstly, they directly affect environmental sustainability by contributing to global warming.

While many advanced economies have phased out the use of harmful refrigerants like R23 (Freon), even newer, less harmful refrigerants can be potent greenhouse gases if they leak.

Secondly, leaking systems indirectly impact sustainability through increased energy consumption.

The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water reports that HVAC systems in commercial buildings can account for up to 50 per cent of their energy use and dominate peak electricity demand.

Bucknell, whose company Technofast was recently appointed as the exclusive distributor for HAELOK pipe fittings in Australia and New Zealand, emphasises the need for prompt action.

“Leaking installations have a direct effect on environmental sustainability and an indirect but major effect on sustainability through higher energy consumption,” he states.

The HAELOK system offers a solution to these challenges. Specially optimised for various refrigerants, including natural ones like carbon dioxide and ammonia, these fittings can withstand high pressures and vibrations common in industrial and commercial HVAC applications.

The system is compatible with pressures ranging from 40 bar up to 160 bar for certain refrigerants.

One of the key advantages of the HAELOK system is its ease of installation. Unlike traditional welding methods that require extensive safety measures and downtime, a single person can install a HAELOK fitting in approximately 40 seconds. This efficiency can significantly reduce repair times and costs.

The HAELOK range includes 250 standard sizes and variations, with the ability to manufacture customised fittings for unique requirements.

This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from power stations and oil refineries to food processing plants and mine sites.

As businesses and industries face increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact and energy costs, solutions like the HAELOK system could play a crucial role in addressing the challenges posed by refrigerant leaks in HVAC and refrigeration systems.
