RedEarth Energy Storage and ambibox partner for first V2G bi-directional EV chargers in Australia

RedEarth Energy Storage and ambibox partner for first V2G bi-directional EV chargers in Australia

RedEarth Energy Storage, an Australian energy storage solutions provider, has announced a new partnership with ambibox, a DC electric vehicle (EV) charging company.

The collaboration aims to produce V2G bi-directional EV chargers for Australian and New Zealand customers, marking a significant milestone in the country’s EV infrastructure development.

The manufacturing of these innovative chargers will take place at RedEarth’s facility in Darra, Queensland, with production set to commence in Q2/2025.

The partnership will deliver Australian-made DC EV chargers to EV owners without rooftop solar or home batteries in the first half of 2025.

  • V2X Technology: The chargers will incorporate both vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies, allowing EV owners to charge or discharge their vehicles to their homes or the grid.
  • Integration with RedEarth’s Ecosystem: The chargers will be part of RedEarth’s private power plant (PPP) ecosystem, optimising returns for EV owners and homeowners with behind-the-meter assets.
  • Compatibility: The three-phase compatible wall chargers have been successfully tested with the majority of EVs available in Australia.

In terms of product availability, the three-phase EV charger is expected to be available in Q2 of 2025 and the anticipated release of the single-phase version is set for Q4 of 2025.

Charles Walker, Co-founder and CEO of RedEarth, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating: “RedEarth’s partnership with ambibox opens new opportunities for electric vehicle owners to use their EVs as private power plants.”

He also highlighted the potential for EV owners to be incentivised with additional revenue streams to power the grid and reduce reliance on grid electricity.

Manfred Przybilla, CEO of ambibox, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting: “ambibox has invested heavily in developing a world-class V2X solution that is built for the future.”

This partnership aligns with the recent announcement by Standards Australia that V2X technology is set to be implemented in Australia from December 2024.

As the first Australian EV charger manufacturer to produce bi-directional chargers locally, RedEarth is poised to lead the country’s behind-the-meter optimisation evolution in the rapidly growing EV market.

With EV adoption accelerating in Australia and over 100,000 new EVs expected to be purchased in 2024, the market for V2X EV chargers presents significant opportunities for growth and innovation in the country’s energy sector.
