Who would have thought your old jeans could insulate your home?

22 Aug, 2025
PLANET PROTECTOR - Who would have thought your old jeans could insulate your home? - PROTECTOR PLANET

Australia is facing a devastating waste crisis, all whilst relying on outdated, toxic materials to build its future. Planet Protector is rewriting that story.

Every year, more than 300,000 tonnes of textile waste are generated, 220,000 of which are dumped in landfills. At the same time, Australia’s construction industry produces a staggering 29 million tonnes of waste annually and consumes 65 per cent of all expanded polystyrene. These materials are not only toxic to the environment but also harmful to human health. Conventional construction materials are fossil fuel-derived, dangerous to handle, and linked to serious long-term health risks. This is not just unsustainable; it is unacceptable.

Planet Protector is the new force in building circularity.

Planet Protector is closing the loop on waste and redefining the future of sustainable construction materials. They aren’t just diverting waste, they are manufacturing scalable, design-ready solutions for buildings, fit-outs, and furniture.

In late 2024, Planet Protector commissioned a $15 million ‘state-of-the-art’ fibre processing facility to reinstate advanced sovereign manufacturing capability in Australia. It is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Powered by cutting-edge European automation, it can process an incredible 150 tonnes of fibre each week. The facility marks a transformative shift in Australia’s construction sector, enabling the local production of world-class, regenerative alternatives that support industry, create jobs, and build circularity.

Their new insulation range is a bold step forward.

Crafted from recycled denim, waste wool, hemp and reclaimed polyester, these products outperform traditional materials where it counts. Planet Protector’s denim insulation is the first of its kind in Australia, providing a new life for denim waste, closing the loop while delivering thermal performance up to R6 and exceptional acoustic performance with an NRC of 1.

Their wool insulation uses wool from crossbred sheep that is unsuitable for textiles and typically destined for landfill. Just as wool keeps sheep warm in winter and cool in summer, it naturally regulates indoor temperatures and improves air quality, actively absorbing airborne pollutants like formaldehyde.

“We have the unique capability to process not only our own insulation and acoustic panels but also waste streams from the building industry, including existing insulation and decorative acoustic panels,” says CEO Joanne Howarth.

The company’s new facility has enabled it to take control of its manufacturing, supporting sovereign and sustainable manufacturing opportunities for other Australian businesses. For Planet Protector, sustainability is not a trend, nor a buzzword. They have redefined waste and created pathways for Australian industries to move away from harmful materials to solutions that regenerate, restore, and reduce emissions.

From fashion runways to the rooftops of Australian homes, denim insulation serves as a powerful reminder that waste only becomes waste when we fail to see its potential.

Starting September 1st, Australians can finally access this game-changing product in-store at Bowens and online at Pricewise Insulation. Insulate with purpose. Build with denim.
