How Aussie Surf Clubs Are Leading the Charge on Climate Resilience

05 Dec, 2025
How Aussie Surf Clubs Are Leading the Charge on Climate Resilience

Australia’s surf lifesavers have long been the guardians of the nation’s coastline, battling treacherous waves to keep communities safe. Now, a new partnership is helping them face a different challenge: rising energy costs and climate volatility.

Australia’s iconic Surf Life Saving Clubs (SLSCs) are embracing a new wave of sustainability, powered by Anker SOLIX X1. In partnership with RESINC Solar & Batteries, this initiative is turning community hubs into beacons of renewable energy resilience—proving that protecting the planet and protecting people go hand in hand.

North Kirra: A Blueprint for Resilience In July, North Kirra SLSC in Queensland became the first site to deploy a dual-system installation of Anker SOLIX X1 (50kWh storage + 12kW solar). For a frontline facility facing severe coastal storms and salt spray, reliability is non-negotiable.

The project allows the club to store solar energy generated during the day and use it during peak periods or blackouts. Crucially, every dollar saved on electricity bills is a dollar that can be redirected toward vital life-saving equipment, training, and volunteer support.

How Aussie Surf Clubs Are Leading the Charge on Climate Resilience

The significance of this project drew Federal attention, with Energy Minister Hon. Chris Bowen MP officially commissioning the system. Minister Bowen highlighted the installation in Parliament as a model for community resilience, praising how quality storage systems can reduce emissions while keeping clubs operational during emergencies.

North Steyne: Global Recognition on Local Sands The movement quickly spread south to North Steyne SLSC in Sydney. This installation gained international attention when it was visited by UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, alongside representatives from the Smart Energy Council.

For the UN climate chief, the humble surf club represented a powerful message: real climate action happens at the grassroots level. Anker SOLIX X1 installation was recognised not just as a battery, but as a tangible example of how communities can adapt to climate change while reducing their carbon footprint.

Innovation Meets Social Responsibility This rollout forms part of a broader commitment by RESINC and Anker SOLIX to support community organisations. By providing advanced energy solutions to these non-profits, the initiative demonstrates that corporate innovation is most impactful when it serves the public good.

More Than Just Technology For the volunteers who run these clubs, X1 is an enabler. “It’s about turning vulnerability into Aussie grit,” says the team at RESINC. By securing energy independence, Surf Life Saving Clubs can focus on what truly matters: keeping watch over the waves.

From the quiet achievement of lowering a club’s power bill to high-profile endorsements from UN leaders, Anker SOLIX X1 is proving to be a silent hero behind the scenes—powering the everyday heroes who keep Australia safe.
