Boundary Power Hydrogen Integrated Stand-Alone Power System unveiled

16 Oct, 2023

Australian First: The Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio MP Unveils Boundary Power Hydrogen Integrated Stand-Alone Power System Funded by Victorian Government.

The Honourable Lily D’Ambrosio MP, Minister for Climate Action, Minister for Energy and Resources, and Minister for the State Electricity Commission, visited Ampcontrol manufacturing facilities in Ringwood, Victoria on Monday 9 October 2023, to see the demonstration unit in action and learn about the world-leading technology that is helping to solve the most complex problems in energy production.

The Honourable Shaun Leane, member of the Legislative Council, representing Noth-Eastern Metropolitan and President of Legislative Council in Victoria, was also in attendance.

Boundary Power proposed the hydrogen-integrated stand-alone power system (HiSAPS) project as part of the Victorian Government Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund, successfully receiving a $176,150 grant to develop a demonstration unit as an evidence base for decarbonisation for Victoria to produce and use renewable hydrogen trials in real-world applications.

The 100% Renewable HiSAPS uses solar power and a renewable hydrogen hybrid battery to store and generate electricity when required. The design utilises Boundary Power’s award-winning Solar Qube® product, a relocatable all-in-one stand-alone power system. Ampcontrol design engineers collaborated with Selectronic for the Solar Qube® electrical design to develop advanced features using the Australian designed and manufactured Selectronic battery inverter.

The concept of the HiSAPS design was to replace the onboard diesel generator with a self-contained hydrogen power system, developed by LAVO. The LAVO unit is a prototype system developed and tested in NSW and deployed for trials across Australia.

The HiSAPS demonstration project and its associated design, installation and integration have provided valuable insights into the technical, regulatory and safety aspects of integrating hydrogen systems into a stand-alone power system.

Initiatives under the Victorian Renewable Hydrogen Industry Development Plan had the following objectives:

  • kick-start investment in Victoria’s renewable hydrogen sector
  • unlock co-investment and partnership opportunities for applicants, creating new jobs and economic growth for Victoria
  • provide an evidence base for decarbonisation through renewable hydrogen and enable
  • demonstration projects to lead the way to commercialisation
  • raise awareness of Hydrogen in Victoria
  • create a streamlined process for industry-government interactions and knowledge sharing.

The project is now entering the operational phase, where the system performance will be monitored for 12 months, creating a repository of insightful technical data and knowledge on the journey towards zero emissions future SPS.

“Our Government is proud to support initiatives like the HiSAPS, which will be critical to meeting our world-leading emission reduction targets and helping to create 59,000 jobs by 2035.

We’re supporting research and development in the renewable hydrogen sector to better understand the role it could play in Victoria’s renewable energy transition.” – The Honourable Lily D’Ambrosio MP

“Our vision at Boundary Power is to lead the energy transition with advancements in stand-alone power system design and technology. Our utility grade, renewable and reliable power solutions have
been deployed across Australia since 2019 and we now have the first hydrogen-integrated unit here in Victoria.

We are extremely thankful to the Victorian Government and the Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate Action for its support and funding through the Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund.

The funding facilitated the design of an innovative solution to demonstrate real-world application, paving the way for future commercialisation of hydrogen integrated stand-alone power systems.”
– Simon Duggan, Boundary Power General Manager.

“There is a world of opportunity in the next five to 10 years to fill the gaps as the world collectively works to achieve global net zero. Some of our most innovative products within the renewable energy
space have come about due to collaboration and partnership.

HiSAPS is a brilliant example of collaboration – investment from government, working together with industry to enable a smooth transition into a clean, reliable, and affordable energy future.” – Rod Henderson, Ampcontrol Managing Director & CEO.

“We are thrilled to participate in the HiSAPS initiative in Victoria, as it holds substantial importance in advancing the commercialisation of green hydrogen. The transition towards a more sustainable
future, driven by hydrogen, requires active involvement from both governmental and corporate sectors, and HiSAPS serves as a prime illustration of this collaboration.” – Jacques Markgraaff, Chief Operating Officer, LAVO.
