The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has awarded a $9 million grant to BluVein to trial a world-first dynamic charging technology aimed at slashing emissions in Australia’s mining sector.
The funding will support the deployment of BluVein’s patented “hammer and rail” dynamic charging system, which enables heavy battery electric mining vehicles to be powered and recharged safely while in motion.
The trial will begin with the development of a 40–60 tonne prototype underground haul truck integrated with the BluVein1 charging technology, capable of approximately one megawatt of dynamic charging.
The company will then scale up the technology for ultra-class heavy surface trucks with BluVeinXL, projected at around eight megawatts.
ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the project highlights how innovative solutions can help Australia’s largest energy users transition towards net zero.
“Australia’s heavy industries are a major source of emissions and energy use,” Miller said.
“If we’re serious about hitting our climate targets, we need bold solutions.
“BluVein’s innovative hammer and rail technology could offer a solution for Australia’s reliance on billions of litres of diesel fuel by using renewable energy delivered through the grid to power mining haul trucks.”
According to BluVein, its scalable charging system reduces emissions, increases efficiency, and improves mine safety by using a protected charging rail adaptable to any layout.
By cutting diesel reliance, the technology aims to accelerate decarbonisation of the mining and processing sector — an essential step in producing low-emission metals and securing resilient global supply chains.
BluVein CEO James Oliver said the grant was a major milestone in developing sustainable mining technologies.
“This project, supported by ARENA, will demonstrate how BluVein1 and BluVeinXL can decarbonise Australia’s mining sector by enabling safe, in-motion electrification.
“By reducing diesel reliance, we aim to lower emissions and enhance operational efficiency, paving the way for sustainable mining practices.
“This project will drive critical advancements in low-emission metals production, benefiting Australia’s economy and environment.”
ARENA’s Industrial Transformation Stream Program, through which BluVein secured its funding, recently closed applications for Round 2.
Round 3 is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2025.
In the meantime, project proponents can make enquiries through ARENA’s funding page.
