QRC welcomes funding for renewable energy study on former mine sites

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has expressed enthusiasm for a new initiative funded by the state government’s Regional Economic Futures Fund (REFF).

The project aims to explore the potential of repurposing former mine sites for renewable energy production in the Bowen Basin.

QRC Chief Executive Officer Janette Hewson announced that a $500,000 grant from the REFF, supplemented by a $50,000 contribution from QRC, will finance a comprehensive feasibility study.

The study will assess the viability of implementing wind and solar energy projects on mined land between Moranbah and Middlemount.

The feasibility study will encompass several key areas:

  • Evaluation of technical requirements
  • Assessment of economic viability
  • Identification of potential community benefits
  • Exploration of a possible demonstration site

Ms Hewson emphasised the importance of community engagement, stating: “Queensland’s resources sector is collaborating with the renewable energy industry, local conservation groups, and organisations like the Fitzroy Partnership for River Health to ensure a comprehensive approach.”

The initiative aligns with Queensland’s reputation for innovative post-mining land use.

Ms. Hewson highlighted several potential advantages:

  • Diversification of employment opportunities in traditional mining communities
  • Support for local industries, including the Mining Equipment, Technology, and Services sector
  • Possible provision of renewable energy to regional businesses and industries
  • Exploration of circular economy principles through the use of recycled materials and existing infrastructure

“This project exemplifies our sector’s commitment to progressive sustainability measures, potentially delivering social and economic benefits to local communities,” Ms Hewson remarked.

The findings from this study are expected to inform both the resources industry and regulators, potentially paving the way for further innovations in post-mining land use across Queensland.

The QRC anticipates commencing the feasibility study before the end of the year.

This initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable resource management and regional economic development in Queensland’s mining regions.
