Deakin University has launched a new multimillion-dollar research centre dedicated to transforming how Australia designs, uses, and recycles metal resources, aiming to establish the nation as a global leader in the circular economy.
Dubbed circAlloy (the ARC Training Centre for Resource Efficient Alloys in a Circular Economy), the initiative has been established through a AU$4.9 million investment from the Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre program.
Backed by a five-year timeline, the hub links researchers, industry partners, and government stakeholders to pioneer cleaner, highly resilient alloy manufacturing technologies.
The centre addresses critical challenges facing Australia’s industrial pipeline, including manufacturing waste, elevated supply chain emissions, and the preservation of sovereign manufacturing capability.
Currently, the research has practical, immediate applications across the sectors of infrastructure, construction, transport, advanced manufacturing, and commercial recycling.
“Australia mines and exports metals, yet too much of the value – and too much of the material itself – slips through our fingers as waste,” said Deakin University Caretaker Vice-Chancellor Professor Matthew Clarke.
“Every tonne of metal we waste carries with it wasted energy, wasted water and wasted money.
“A nation that designs, uses and recovers its resources more intelligently is a nation that is more self-reliant, more competitive and more secure.”
Working alongside collaborative partners like the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and industrial wear leader Bradken, circAlloy’s research team will develop next-generation alloys.
These advanced materials will be engineered to require fewer raw materials, consume less energy during production, offer greater longevity in the field, and support total recyclability at the end of their operational lifecycle.
The centre is also focused on upskilling Australia’s industrial workforce. By providing specialised training, international academic integration, and direct industry placements, circAlloy plans to train and deploy the next generation of materials scientists, metallurgists, and advanced manufacturing engineers.
