Queensland Hydro has announced the awarding of three significant work packages for the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project, following a statement by Minister for Clean Energy Mick de Brenni on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
The contracts, awarded to Queensland-based companies, mark a major milestone in the development of one of the state’s largest renewable energy infrastructure projects.
The three work packages cover critical aspects of the project:
- Temporary Worker Camps: Awarded to Decmil, this package aims to provide safe and comfortable accommodation for the project’s workforce while minimising pressure on local housing.
- Dams Design: The Water2Wire Joint Venture, comprising GHD, Stantec, and Multiconsult, has been tasked with the design of the project’s dams.
- Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) Design: AFRY-Aurecon Joint Venture has been appointed to lead the design of the PHES system.
Queensland Hydro CEO Kieran Cusack expressed enthusiasm about the progress, stating: “These contracts represent a significant step forward for the Borumba Project.
“We’re partnering with experienced Queensland-based companies to deliver world-class infrastructure that will play a crucial role in the state’s renewable energy future.”
The Borumba Pumped Hydro Project, located west of the Sunshine Coast, is a cornerstone of Queensland’s Energy and Jobs Plan.
With a planned capacity of 2,000 MW, it’s expected to play a vital role in the state’s transition to 80 per cent renewable energy by 2035.
Minister de Brenni highlighted the economic benefits of the project, stating: “This investment not only advances our clean energy goals but also creates significant job opportunities and economic growth for Queensland.”
The awarding of these contracts follows extensive community engagement efforts by Queensland Hydro, including the establishment of community consultation groups and the development of a Community Benefits Framework.
As the project moves forward, Queensland Hydro remains committed to working closely with local communities and stakeholders to ensure the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project delivers lasting benefits to the region while contributing to the state’s renewable energy targets.
