In a significant leap forward for sustainable energy storage, Queensland company PowerCap has officially launched its innovative sodium-ion battery system.
The PowerCap POD (Power On Demand) was unveiled on December 4, 2024, promising to transform the renewable energy landscape with a cleaner, more reliable, and affordable energy supply.
PowerCap Founder and CEO Dane El Safty highlighted the technology’s potential to bridge the public’s desire for a green transition with an affordable energy solution.
“The PowerCap POD is an advanced energy storage system that utilises non-mined sodium-ion technology as a safer and more sustainable alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries,” El Safty stated.
The sodium-ion battery technology offers several advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries.
Chris Dryden, General Manager of Product Development and Manufacturing at PowerCap, highlighted that the system uses a lightweight compound made in Australia from recycled plastics, bio-waste, and sodium derived from water desalination, achieving a zero-carbon footprint.
“Compared to lithium, sodium-ion batteries are not only longer lasting, safer, cleaner and more affordable but also one hundred per cent recyclable at the end of their lives,” Dryden explained.
After a decade of rigorous research and development, the PowerCap technology is now available for stationary and mobile use in commercial, industrial, and residential markets.
The system incorporates a proprietary energy algorithm that allows efficient energy management, enabling users to buy and sell energy from the grid cost-effectively.
PowerCap’s sodium-ion batteries boast impressive charging capabilities, with the ability to charge up to 3C, meaning a 100 kW battery can be charged at 300 kW in approximately 20 minutes.
The technology has been independently tested and certified by TUV to meet International Standards IEC62619.
With its focus on sustainability and cost-effectiveness, PowerCap is poised to make a significant impact on the energy storage market.
The company is exploring manufacturing opportunities in the US and India to meet growing demand, particularly from commercial clients.
As the global renewable revolution gains momentum, PowerCap’s sodium-ion battery technology represents a tangible solution to accelerate the transition towards cleaner energy.
By offering a safer, more sustainable, and affordable alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries, PowerCap is set to revolutionise energy storage for major commercial enterprises, agricultural suppliers, construction material companies, and residential solar users alike.
