In a groundbreaking move for the renewable energy sector, Queensland-based company My Nu Energy has successfully deployed its first commercial battery in Brisbane.
This marks a significant milestone for the company, which specialises in repurposing electric vehicle (EV) batteries to create cost-effective energy storage solutions for businesses and communities.
Founded by John Myler and Shaun Nugent, My Nu Energy aims to reduce waste in the pursuit of renewable energy by extending the life of EV batteries that would otherwise be recycled for minerals or discarded in landfills.
By giving these batteries a “second life,” the company has developed a new generation of sustainable energy storage systems.
Their innovative approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers economic benefits, as the My Nu batteries are up to a third cheaper than current alternatives.
The versatile My Nu batteries can replace diesel generators, provide grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), or be combined with portable solar systems for remote power applications or microgrid setups.
Each 20-foot container holds 18 EV batteries, offering 1 MWh of storage, with the capability to connect multiple containers for capacities of 100 MWh or more.
The company also provides a fully-maintained monthly lease option with terms ranging from one to 10 years.
Shaun Nugent, co-founder and CEO of Phronis Consulting, highlighted the rapid deployment and adaptability of these battery systems, emphasising their suitability for various environments and their efficient power charge and discharge rates.
Meanwhile, John Myler, with a background in the insurance industry, was drawn to the project for its potential to support Australia’s transition to net-zero emissions.
In addition to their large-scale solutions, My Nu Energy has developed a portable trailer battery offering 120 KWh of energy storage, sufficient to power an average three-person household for six days.
This portable solution is ideal for events, markets, and emergency backup scenarios.
My Nu Energy’s pioneering efforts in repurposing EV batteries not only provide a sustainable energy storage solution but also contribute to achieving renewable energy targets in Australia.
As the demand for electric vehicles rises, the company is poised to address the emerging challenge of managing end-of-life EV batteries, ensuring they are used to their full potential.
