Holcim Australia and Putzmeister Oceania have announced the trial of Australia’s first fully electric concrete mixer truck, marking a significant step towards sustainable construction practices in the country.
The innovative SANY eMixer, which has received Australian Design Rules (ADRs) approval and road registration, represents a major advancement in the industry’s efforts to achieve carbon-neutral construction sites.
The SANY eMixer is the result of a collaborative effort between Putzmeister Oceania and Cesco Australia.
The vehicle features an Australian-made mixer structure mounted on a SANY SY408P Electric Chassis, integrated with locally designed controls.
This combination of global technology and local manufacturing has produced a 100 per cent electric, battery-powered mixer truck tailored for Australian conditions.
At the heart of the SANY eMixer is a powerful 350 kWh battery from CATL, a leading global battery manufacturer.
The vehicle offers flexible charging options, with the ability to fully charge overnight using a 30-kW charger or rapidly charge in just three hours.
This ensures the truck can meet the demanding schedule of daily concrete delivery operations.
Initial trial results have been promising, with the SANY eMixer completing multiple trips between the plant and job sites while maintaining an average 35 per cent state of charge at the end of each day.
The electric mixer truck is expected to deliver significantly lower operating costs compared to its diesel counterparts, due to improved energy efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements.
Chris Bartlett, Head of Construction at Putzmeister Oceania, emphasised the significance of this development: “The SANY eMixer and our recent introduction of the Putzmeister iONTRON hybrid concrete pump demonstrate our commitment to leading the way in supporting a more sustainable construction industry.”
Cyril Giraud, Head of Sustainability at Holcim Australia and New Zealand, added: “Working in partnership with our suppliers to reduce carbon emissions across our transportation and logistics can go a long way in helping us reach our sustainability goals.”
The trial of the SANY eMixer aligns with Holcim’s broader strategy to decarbonise the building industry and promote sustainable infrastructure.
As the first company to trial this electric concrete mixer in Australia, Holcim is closely monitoring its performance to evaluate its potential to contribute to more sustainable operating practices.
This pioneering initiative represents a significant milestone in the Australian construction industry’s journey towards reduced emissions and improved environmental sustainability.
