An Australian wastewater technology company is calling on plant operators to prioritise the inspection of inlet screening systems to protect against emerging challenges that could impact performance and potentially lead to environmental spills.
CST Wastewater Solutions, with 35 years of experience in municipal and industrial wastewater technology in Australia and New Zealand, emphasises the critical role of screens as the first line of defence in water and wastewater treatment.
Managing Director Michael Bambridge stated: “Good pre-screening processes present the first opportunity in the wastewater treatment process chain for users to safeguard against challenges presented by climate change and ingestion of plastic waste and other environmental challenges that can lead to blockages and spillages.”
The company, which conducts inspections to ensure screens meet or exceed OEM performance standards, has introduced ultra-fine screening technology capable of filtering particles down to 0.02mm.
This innovation aims to prevent problems before they start, particularly in addressing issues like microplastics entering waste streams.
Bambridge warns against choosing imported wastewater treatment plants based solely on upfront costs, noting that this approach often leads to higher long-term expenses and increased risk of sudden failures.
He cites a recent case where the company had to replace a set of rusted-out steel screens for a municipality after just five years of service.
To address these challenges, CST has shifted to local production of robust stainless steel pre-screening technologies, ensuring top Australasian standards of engineering and performance.
The company also offers dedicated screen inspection services to determine performance levels and suitability for local conditions.
Bambridge highlighted the importance of regular maintenance and check-ups, stating: “Most companies these days are pretty risk aware.
“They know production stoppages are costly, and environmental spills can affect their statutory licence to operate.”
He also advised that small investments in yearly maintenance can provide good long-term value and return on investment.
