Exmouth trial to test two-way Electric Vehicle charging potential

An Electric Vehicle (EV) orchestration trial in Exmouth will test the potential for EVs to draw power from the grid and feed it back into the network. Horizon Power is conducting the trial - which is Western Australia's first trial of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capability - to test the capability of its management system and to allow EVs to act as mobile energy storage solutions. If successful, V2G could help power homes, reduce power bills, and stabilise the electricity grid. Horizon Power will commence the 12-month trial this month, in partnership with the Gascoyne Development Commission, Shire of Exmouth, Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and WA Country Health Service, which operates Exmouth Hospital. Each will receive a Nissan Leaf EV equipped with V2G smart-charging equipment and will be encouraged to use the vehicles as normal. Exmouth was selected as its tourism-... more

Heat recovery – Save money and the environment

Compressors and the compressed air they generate are used in a multitude of applications. However, the fact that compressor exhaust heat can be harnessed often remains forgotten. Up to 96% of the drive energy supplied to a compressor is available for reuse and this is referred to as “heat recovery”. Heat recovery not only saves energy and costs, but also reduces the operator’s CO² footprint. Of course, this heat could simply be conveyed away. However, there are plenty of ways to make use of this readily available energy source that occurs as a by-product of the compression process. The simplest and most efficient method is to use the compressor exhaust heat directly, e.g. for heating adjoining rooms or spaces. Here, instead of discharging hot air from the compressed air station outside, an air ducting system directs it to neighbouring warehouses or workshops. When no hot... more

Boost for Derby Regional Hospital with $1.4 million rooftop solar system

Derby Regional Hospital's carbon emissions and annual energy consumption are set to fall, thanks to a $1.4 million investment by the Cook Government in large-scale rooftop solar. The 910-panel, 364 kilowatt rooftop solar photo-voltaic (PV) system, equivalent to the capacity of about 60 home solar systems, has been switched on at the Kimberley hospital. WA's regional energy provider, Horizon Power, installed the state-of-the-art solar system in partnership with WA Country Health Service. Modelling forecasts the system will lead to a $70,000 per annum reduction in variable energy costs for the hospital and reduce the hospital's annual energy consumption by 24 per cent, in turn cutting its carbon emissions by about 300 tonnes per year. "The Derby Regional Hospital solar system is a great example of the Cook Government delivering on its commitment to increase renewable energy upt... more

Dyno Nobel’s Moranbah plant unveils $20m project

In a significant step towards environmental sustainability and decarbonisation, Dyno Nobel's Moranbah plant has inaugurated a groundbreaking $20 million nitrous oxide abatement project. The newly unveiled project boasts a 20-year lifespan and is projected to abate approximately 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually. This reduction is akin to removing nearly 50,000 cars from the road each year or planting over three million trees annually. The project's technology involves converting nitrous oxide emissions from the manufacturing of nitric acid into naturally occurring nitrogen and oxygen. This process effectively eliminates over 95 per cent of nitrous oxide emissions from the production of explosive products for the mining industry. Furthermore, the abatement project is expected to lead to a reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for Dyno No... more

Komatsu Australia partners with DHL Express for million-dollar pilot program

Komatsu Australia has taken a significant step towards achieving its goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50 per cent by 2050 by signing up for a million-dollar pilot program with DHL Express. The program aims to utilise sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to reduce the emissions related to Komatsu's air express shipments in Australia in 2024. The GoGreen Plus program, run by logistics partner DHL Express, will allow Komatsu to invest $1 million to reduce the carbon emissions associated with their international shipments through the use of SAF. This initiative is part of Komatsu's broader commitment to sustainability, which includes 27 major sustainability projects aimed at reducing GHG emissions at every possible point. DHL Express Australia and Papua New Guinea Managing Director Phil Corcoran said: "Sustainable aviation fuel is one of the most effective ways companies can c... more
