Perth-based wind energy developer Wind with Purpose (WwP) has announced a major partnership with Quenda Wind Power Pty Ltd (QWP) to advance the Marradong Wind Farm, a proposed onshore wind project south-east of Boddington, Western Australia.
If constructed, Marradong would be the largest wind farm in the state, boasting a targeted capacity of more than 300 megawatts (MW).
The collaboration was formalised in June 2024, with WwP signing a development service agreement to support QWP in securing Development Approval for the project.
Marradong Wind Farm is expected to generate approximately one terawatt-hour (TWh) of clean electricity annually, equivalent to offsetting 557,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The project is designed to decarbonise local industries while creating new economic opportunities and benefits for the South West community.
“This partnership with QWP is a major step forward for WwP and the Marradong Wind Farm Project,” said WwP Chair David Thomas.
QWP is a wholly owned subsidiary of Summit Southern Cross Power, itself part of Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, which has a significant presence in Western Australia’s energy sector.
Sumitomo currently holds a 49.99 per cent stake in the Bluewaters Power Station, the state’s only privately owned coal plant, and in the NewGen Power Kwinana gas plant.
The Marradong Wind Farm is part of Sumitomo’s broader strategy to expand its renewable assets in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), with the Southern Scarp region identified as having potential for more than 2 gigawatts (GW) of wind generation capacity.
If approved, the Marradong project is slated for completion by 2029, aligning with the planned closure of the last coal-fired power stations in the region.
The development also aligns with WwP’s ambition to grow its wind portfolio to over 5.5 GW across Western Australia and Ireland by 2034.
WwP’s unique embedded wind power asset model aims to reduce transmission losses, minimise costly grid upgrades, and deliver reliable, affordable green energy to industrial customers.
The company is also exploring the integration of customised Battery Energy Storage Systems to further support customer sustainability goals.
WwP remains committed to working with partners, government, landowners, First Nations, and local communities to ensure the benefits of renewable energy are shared widely and equitably across its project portfolio.
