Wärtsilä to deliver Stage 4 of Origin’s Eraring battery storage facility

15 Dec, 2025
Origin’s Eraring battery energy storage system

Synergy has appointed Wärtsilä to deliver the fourth stage of the Eraring battery facility at Origin Energy’s Eraring Power Station in New South Wales.

The project will add 360MWh of new energy storage capacity, bringing the total scope of the Eraring battery to 700MW/3,160MWh.

The project is the largest battery facility in Australia and one of the largest globally, connecting to Australia’s National Electricity Market and providing critical grid services.

With this extension, the project will help balance New South Wales’ grid as coal-fired plants retire and renewable energy generation grows.

The fourth stage of the battery facility will utilise Wärtsilä’s fully integrated, modular, and compact Quantum energy storage system. The project is supported by a multi-term service agreement, ensuring long-term reliability and optimal system efficiency.

Tamara de Gruyter, president of Wärtsilä Energy Storage and EVP at Wärtsilä, said: “This extension marks another important milestone in Wärtsilä’s path towards enabling a secure, renewable energy future in Australia and around the world.

“Alongside Origin, we are setting a new global benchmark for large-scale energy storage with one of the largest and most advanced battery energy storage facilities in the world.”

Origin chose Wärtsilä for both stage one and stage two of the project.

Together, these stages have established Eraring as a cornerstone project in Australia’s clean energy transition and one of the world’s largest battery energy storage facilities.

The fourth stage extension will commence in December and will be completed by early 2027.

ith stage four underway, Wärtsilä’s energy storage portfolio in Australia now exceeds 5.8GWh.
