Neoen Australia has advanced plans for a major new wind project in the Wheatbelt, with a proposal for the 500 megawatt (MW) Yathroo Wind Farm near Dandaragan now open for a seven‑day public comment period with Western Australia’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
The project is classified under the EPA’s power generation industry sector and was referred under section 38 of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act).
The Yathroo Wind Farm is proposed on freehold agricultural land approximately five kilometres south of the town of Dandaragan, within the state’s Wheatbelt region.
The development envelope covers 15,618 hectares, with a total disturbance footprint of 729.1 hectares for turbines, access and associated infrastructure.
Neoen’s proposal includes the clearing of several vegetation types within this footprint, including up to 10.28 hectares of remnant native vegetation, 5.45 hectares of isolated native trees and shrubs, 5.05 hectares of planted native and exotic eucalypts, and 2.27 hectares of non‑native plantations.
Existing agricultural land uses would continue around project infrastructure, consistent with typical wind farm layouts in the region.
The proposal provides for the construction and operation of up to 65 onshore wind turbines, with a combined generation capacity of up to 500 MW.
Associated infrastructure includes a battery energy storage system (BESS), electrical cabling, a substation, transmission infrastructure, and other supporting and temporary facilities.
Neoen’s material for the project indicates the BESS is intended to support grid stability and enable shifting of wind generation to periods of higher demand.
The wind farm is proposed to connect into Western Power’s existing high‑voltage transmission network via an adjacent transmission line, integrating the project into the South West Interconnected System that services much of southern Western Australia.
The project is one of several large‑scale renewable energy developments proposed in the Wheatbelt, alongside other wind farm proposals south of Dandaragan.
The EPA has listed Neoen Australia as the proponent for the Yathroo Wind Farm on its proposals register, with the project assigned to the power generation sector.
The referral has been made under section 38 of the EP Act, initiating the EPA’s environmental impact assessment process.
As of 13 January 2026, the proposal’s status on the EPA website is recorded as ‘Seven‑day public comment period open’, allowing stakeholders and community members to provide feedback on whether and how the proposal should be assessed.
Following the close of this short public comment window, the EPA will consider submissions alongside the referral documentation before determining the appropriate level of assessment.
