Eku Energy has been awarded a significant contract for a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in New South Wales, Australia.
The company announced today that it has secured a NSW Long Duration Storage Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LDS LTESA) from AEMO Services for a 100 MW/800 MWh BESS project in Yoogali, within the Griffith Local Government Area.
The Griffith BESS project will provide eight hours of energy storage capacity, allowing for the storage of excess renewable energy and its dispatch during high-demand periods.
This capability will play a crucial role in balancing supply and demand, reducing energy price volatility, and enhancing the stability of the National Electricity Market (NEM).
Strategically located just 500 metres from the Griffith Substation, the BESS will efficiently integrate into the existing electricity network.
With its substantial storage capacity, the facility is designed to meet over 88 per cent of the daily electricity demand in the Griffith LGA.
Daniel Burrows, Chief Executive Officer of Eku Energy, emphasised the significance of this achievement: “Securing the Long Duration Storage Long-Term Energy Service Agreement for our Griffith BESS is a significant milestone for Eku Energy.
“This project underscores our commitment to accelerating the energy transition by delivering safe and reliable energy storage solutions, through providing cost-effective clean energy to existing and future generations, whilst also supporting New South Wales’ transition to a sustainable energy future.”
The Griffith BESS is part of a larger tender award by AEMO Services, which saw a total of 1.03 GW of capacity and 13.79 GWh of electricity storage capacity contracted — the largest LDS LTESA tender outcome to date.
This tender is a key component of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, aiming to transform the state’s electricity system by 2040.
Eku Energy’s project secured a maximum LTESA contract term of 14 years, with financial close expected in the first quarter of 2026. The Griffith BESS is anticipated to become operational in 2028.
The project aligns with Eku Energy’s broader strategy to develop and manage a diverse portfolio of energy storage assets globally.
The company is committed to engaging with the local community throughout the project’s development, ensuring it delivers economic, social, and environmental benefits to the region.
This award marks a significant step forward in Australia’s transition to renewable energy, with long-duration storage playing a crucial role in maintaining grid stability and reliability as the country moves away from fossil fuels.
