CIMIC Group’s UGL has been appointed by Neoen to install the high voltage infrastructure which will connect a Tesla-supplied Battery Energy Storage System at Neoen’s Western Downs Green Power Hub, around 250 kilometres west of Brisbane.

Following construction, the battery, which will also be installed by UGL, will work alongside Neoen’s Western Downs solar farm at the same site and allow stored energy to be transmitted into the electricity network from the Australian summer of 2024/2025.

UGL is a specialist in the design, construction and operation of renewables assets having completed the construction of 11 solar farms and the installation of three large-scale batteries.

CIMIC Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaria said: “CIMIC is actively pursuing the emerging opportunities driven by the energy transition and we’re proud to again work with Neoen.

“Battery Energy Storage Systems provide critical grid support services, improving the reliability of energy supply for many Australians, as well as helping contribute to meet Australia’s net-zero aspirations.”

UGL Managing Director Doug Moss said: “UGL is pleased to work with Neoen, utilising our combined capabilities to ensure the successful delivery of this important energy storage infrastructure.

“We enjoy a strong relationship, having recently completed the construction of the Victorian Big Battery near Geelong in Victoria, at the time the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

“With our unique capabilities and national footprint, UGL is perfectly positioned to assist our clients and governments in their energy transition journey.”

CIMIC Group is an engineering-led construction, mining, services and public-private partnerships company and comprises construction businesses CPB Contractors, Leighton Asia and Broad; mining and mineral processing companies Thiess (joint control) and Sedgman; services specialist UGL; and development and investment arm Pacific Partnerships – all supported by in-house engineering consultancy EIC Activities.
