Hyundai and UNCAGED partner for sustainable interiors

Hyundai CRADLE, Hyundai Motor Group’s global open innovation hub, has announced a partnership with UNCAGED Innovations, a biomaterials leader, to co-develop sustainable, animal-free leather alternatives for future automotive interiors.

The collaboration leverages UNCAGED’s proprietary technology to create high-performance, grain-based biomaterials designed to significantly reduce environmental impact compared to traditional leather.

Early results show the breakthrough material cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 95 per cent, reduces water use by 89 per cent, and lowers energy consumption by 71 per cent — without compromising on durability, texture, or luxury.

“UNCAGED’s grain-based protein leather alternative stood out to us for its unique molecular design and manufacturing process, which allows us to drastically lower environmental impact while meeting the demanding quality and performance standards of automotive interiors,” said Brendon Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai CRADLE Silicon Valley.

“UNCAGED’s approach, which minimises chemical inputs and leverages natural resources like coffee bean shells for dyes, aligns perfectly with Hyundai Motor Group’s sustainability material strategy of prioritising high bio content and minimal chemical use.”

UNCAGED Innovations’ patented platform, BioFuze, fuses grain proteins with plant-based elements to replicate the scaffolding functions of collagen — the structural protein in animal hides.

This biomaterial approach allows the company to create its ELEVATE product, which closely mimics the look, feel, and performance of animal leather while eliminating the environmental and ethical concerns associated with livestock production.

“Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to sustainable and animal-free materials makes them the ideal partner for us to advance what’s possible in automotive manufacturing,” said Stephanie Downs, CEO and co-founder of UNCAGED Innovations.

“Automotive interiors require the highest possible durability and quality.

“Developing a scalable, sustainable alternative for vehicle interiors underpins the strength of the technology behind our entire platform, helping us create luxurious and durable materials for a wide range of applications and industries.”

By integrating advanced biomaterials into its supply chain, Hyundai Motor Group reinforces its position as a leader in material innovation and environmental responsibility, underscoring its vision of shaping a more sustainable future for global mobility.
