A major milestone in electric vehicle (EV) safety has been achieved with the independent verification of EV Fire Protection’s world-first fixed fire suppression system, EV FirePro.
Developed and manufactured entirely in Australia, the EV FirePro system is specifically designed for EV parking bays and has now been independently tested and validated by the globally recognised Applus+ Laboratories in Spain.
Testing was conducted in 2025 due to the absence of purpose-built EV fire testing facilities in Australia, confirming the system’s effectiveness, safety, and compliance with international fire safety standards.
“With global EV sales projected to exceed 200 million by 2030, the risks associated with EV fires in confined environments are only increasing,” said Gareth Morgan, Director of EV Fire Protection.
“Unlike traditional fires, EV battery fires are complex, intense, and can reignite hours later. Our system was engineered from the ground up to contain these fires at the source and prevent escalation.”
EV FirePro directly tackles the most critical hazards of lithium-ion battery fires, including thermal runaway, extreme heat, and the release of toxic gases.
Installed at the base of the vehicle, where battery ignition typically begins, it deploys a targeted water spray to suppress flames, reduce heat spread, and create safer conditions for emergency services.
Independent testing confirmed that no fire spread occurred to adjacent vehicles.
Temperatures around the burning EV stayed below 60 degrees Celsius, ceiling temperatures remained under 250 degrees Celsius, and heat flux kept below 2.5 kW/m² — minimising structural risk and preventing ignition of surrounding materials.
A brief spike to 250 degrees Celsius occurred during a deflagration event triggered by ignition of flammable gases moments before EV FirePro activated.
“We now have the independent validation required for international rollout,” Morgan said.
“This solution was conceived, developed, and built entirely in Australia, and it’s ready to meet global demand for safer EV infrastructure.”
Industry experts have recognised the innovation as a major leap forward in EV fire safety.
Jussef Liban, Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering, described EV FirePro as “the most sensible solution” to date.
“It is not intended to extinguish an EV fire entirely,” Liban noted, “but to reduce its effects: limiting spread, protecting adjacent vehicles, dissipating heat, and creating safer conditions for firefighter intervention.”
Martin Lown BEM, Certified Fire Investigator and former UK Fire Service Commander, called it “a new approach to vehicle fire containment – an ‘upside-down sprinkler’ from down under”.
He added: “Traditional ceiling-mounted systems are not designed to target the undercarriage, where EV battery fires originate.
“EV FirePro’s ground-mounted design delivers targeted spray below and outward, helping to contain heat flux and slow the spread.”
According to Lown: “The tested effectiveness of EV FirePro means a vehicle fire can be more contained in the early stages, giving fire crews both time and safer conditions to act.
“It supports both offensive and defensive tactics and reflects what the industry urgently needs.”
Beyond emergency response, the system offers benefits for EV owners, insurers, developers, and property managers of high-density environments by improving fire protection, mitigating losses, and enhancing occupant safety.
EV Fire Protection is continuing rapid expansion across multiple continents, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.
Upcoming site visits and installations are planned for Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand, as well as at a Jaguar Land Rover test facility in the UK, before the end of 2025.
The company will also host regional training and demonstration events as part of its Asia-Pacific expansion strategy.
As part of its overseas outreach, EV Fire Protection joined the Queensland–India business delegation led by the Premier of Queensland, the Hon. David Crisafulli.
During a formal MoU signing ceremony in Delhi on 1 September 2025, the company announced plans to launch EV FirePro in the Indian market — a move endorsed by the Queensland state government.
Adding to its recognition, EV Fire Protection has been nominated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Business Award, with winners to be announced on 6 November 2025.
