Emerald set to supercharge by joining CQ big battery blitz

Emerald has been selected for Central Queensland's next large-scale network-connected battery site, which will provide eight megawatt-hours of energy with 4 megawatts of power for up to 2 hours. The new battery, part of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, is second in Central Queensland after Tanby switched on last year, and will be publicly owned by Ergon Energy. The new battery is one of the next 12 large-scale, electricity network-connected batteries that will help Queensland communities reap even more benefits from rooftop solar. Emerald is home to over 1,920 solar systems, and the battery will all... more

SwitchDin to build energy resources test lab

Energy technology company SwitchDin will build the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Distributed Energy Resources (DER) focused test lab, after the NSW Government’s Jobs Plus Program provided support for the company. The lab will allow SwitchDin to emulate a complete microgrid test environment to test a wide range of DER’s, such as solar inverters, batteries, EV chargers and smart loads including air conditioners and heat pumps. This testing will enable SwitchDin to support different operating regimes that can affect the efficiency of DER for the provision of grid services and participation in energy ma... more

Renewable energy opportunity on NSW Crown land

Solar or wind power renewable energy projects could be established on Crown land in the Murray region with the NSW Government launching an Expression of Interest (EOI) campaign. Crown Lands’ Executive Director of Land and Asset Management Greg Sullivan said the EOI to construct and operate a renewable energy site near Balranald is being conducted under the Office of Energy and Climate Change’s Renewable Energy Infrastructure Investment (REII) program. Sullivan said: “Renewable energy investment on Crown land can support increased power supplies and security, less emissions to help protect the environ... more

Maggot-infested meals could be final straw for workers at Snowy Hydro 2.0

The Australian Workers' Union (AWU) is warning workers on the Snowy Hydro 2.0 project may have to walk off the job to protect their safety and wellbeing due to unhygienic food being served on site. Workers have taken photos of food riddled with maggots being served on site, and other meals that appear all but inedible. AWU NSW Secretary Tony Callinan said the food being served was indicative of a broader management problem on site. He said: "Supermax prisoners are served better food than the workers building Snowy Hydro 2.0. "You have workers living, literally locked up in a camp with limited recreat... more

Australian households could save significantly on water and energy bills

An in-depth review of over 20,000 Melbourne households revealed significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy consumption, and associated costs that may be lowered through greater water efficiency. Water use in Melbourne houses accounts for 3.8 per cent of GHG emissions, which is comparable to total domestic and international travel in Australia. Researchers from Monash University and The University of Queensland have indicated that a Melbourne-wide program entailing a simple shower head retrofit could reduce customer bills by $160 and lower GHG emissions by between 98 and 226 kilo-tonnes per year, wh... more

Transforming wastewater treatment for a greener Victoria

Wastewater treatment in Melbourne’s west is about to be transformed thanks to a $711 million investment to modernise the plant to ensure the health and sanitation needs of Victoria’s growing population are met for generations to come. VIC Minister for Water Harriet Shing recently announced the start of works on a new Resource Recovery and Re-Use Complex — the first major milestone in the modernisation of the Western Treatment Plant. “Innovation and efficiency in wastewater treatment has enabled Victoria to lead in adaptation to climate change, our circular economy and delivering large-scale improve... more

Hybrid design revealed as lowest carbon footprint for new Kyklos building in Luxembourg

UNStudio, with local partner HYP Architects, were recently announced by the Atenor, Arhs group and Agora Luxembourg as the winners in the competition for the design of the Kyklos building in Belval, Luxembourg, and have found a hybrid steel-concrete design would provide the lowest carbon footprint. Belval is a redevelopment project that has successfully transformed an old industrial site in Luxembourg into an urban centre that now houses a university and technological centre, residential and office spaces, in addition to hotels and retail. The Kyklos building will be the last building to shape the Central Squ... more

Building’s adaptive reuse saves on embodied carbon

The 1960s industrial precinct formerly owned by Philip Morris has been sustainably transformed into a $200 million commercial community, the adaptive reuse process included the retainment of the existing structure throughout the build. This has resulted in savings to date of 19 million kilograms of embodied carbon — which is the equivalent of 400 rail cars full of coal. After the completion of Building 4, the project’s builder — Kapitol Group — delivered a construction program in which these embodied carbon savings contributed to the developer’s overall goal for the site to increase energy effici... more
